WHAT IS DERMAPLANING

Dermaplaning is a popular cosmetic procedure performed by skilled estheticians. This innovative treatment involves a specialized, sterile surgical scalpel to gently remove the top layer of skin, the epidermis. By skillfully exfoliating the skin, dermaplaning can remove dead skin cells along with fine facial hairs, commonly referred to as “peach fuzz.” This technique is also effective in minimizing fine lines and acne scars, all within a quick, 30-minute session.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning offers numerous advantages. It delivers immediate results, leaving the skin smooth and removing facial fuzz and dead skin for a more even base that enhances makeup application. This removal also allows for deeper penetration of skincare products, enhancing their effectiveness. Moreover, this gentle form of exfoliation can reduce the appearance of pores, acne scars, and fine lines, while improving skin tone and overall appearance, thereby boosting self-confidence. It is suitable for most skin types and provides a quick, pain-free solution to achieve glowing, youthful-looking skin.

Despite common misconceptions, the fine facial hairs removed during dermaplaning will not grow back thicker or darker. These hairs are vellus hairs, and removing them does not change their texture or color when they regrow. Post-treatment, your skin will feel and look smoother and brighter. To maintain these results, it is recommended to schedule additional treatments every three to four weeks.

Is Dermaplaning Good for Acme?

Dermaplaning may offer benefits for those struggling with acne, though it’s important to consider individual skin conditions. This procedure involves carefully removing the top layer of dead skin cells and fine, vellus hair (peach fuzz). By doing so, it helps to unclog pores, which is a significant factor in the development of acne.

Moreover, after a dermaplaning session, your skin becomes more receptive to acne treatments. The removal of the outer layer of dead skin allows topical treatments and serums to penetrate deeper and more effectively. This can enhance the overall efficacy of your skincare regimen, potentially leading to clearer skin.

However, it’s crucial for individuals with active acne outbreaks or very sensitive skin to consult with a skincare professional before undergoing dermaplaning. The procedure might irritate active acne lesions, so it may not be suitable for everyone. A licensed esthetician can provide personalized advice based on your specific skin needs.

What Happens When Hair Grows Back ?

You won’t grow a beard after getting dermaplaning. Your hair will grow back, but it will just look like it did before you had the treatment . A surgical blade is used, which just shaves the ends from the fine vellus hairs. Nothing happens to the follicles themselves, so the growth of the hair isn’t changed from this procedure.

When it comes to exfoliating I’m a big  fan of peels over dermaplaning (even for sensitive skin). While dermaplaning and chemical peels are effective apart, they work synergistically together. During the treatment the  outer layers of the skin is being removed making the chemical solution in a chemical peel far more effective. Since dermaplaning enables the acid solution to reach deeper levels of the dermis, the chemical solution in a combination treatment is left on the skin for a shorter period of time than it is during a chemical peel alone. Dermaplaning can be combined with many different types of chemical peels, from mild glycolic and salicylic acid peels to stronger peels.
